Good Friday is a Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday, which marks the resurrection of Jesus.
Some theories suggest that “good” may have come from “God’s Friday” or “holy” and others suggest it refers to the positive outcome of the events of the day. Nevertheless, it remains an important day for Christians to remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Catholics observe Good Friday as a day of fasting, prayer, and penance.
They typically attend church services and participate in the Stations of the Cross, which is a series of prayers and meditations that recall the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. Some Catholics may also choose to abstain from meat on Good Friday as an act of penance.
According to the Bible, Jesus died at approximately 3pm on Good Friday. The Gospel of Mark states that “At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?'”.
Wear RED in honor of the blood that Jesus shed on the Cross for our salvation. This is also the day’s liturgical color.
Good Friday falls on the 29th of March 2024, preceding Easter Sunday on the 1st of April 2024.
The date of the holiday varies in different years on both calendars (Gregorian and Julian), and it depends on the full moon. This is why Easter, as well as Good Friday, may fall between March 22 and April 25.
