Recognized on the last Sunday in May, Mother’s Day in the Dominican Republic is further proof of the country’s passion for life and celebrating special occasions. Instead of small gatherings of just mothers and their children, Dominican Mother’s Day history details a larger festive occasion.
Mother’s Day in the Caribbean (and the U.S.) is most commonly the second Sunday in May, but it may also fall on the last Sunday in May depending on where you live.
Mother’s Day in the U.S. is always on the second Sunday in May, but for those of Mexican, Salvadoran and/or Guatemalan descent, Mother’s Day often comes a bit earlier. Dia de la Madres always lands on May 10 for those who celebrate.
The 10th was chosen so Mexican families would always have money to spend on the celebration. Mexico was also the first Latin American country to officially recognize Mother’s Day as a federal holiday. The government built a sculpture in Mexico City on May 10, 1949, to celebrate all mothers.
